Reaction from YTSO Management to Concrete Price Increases

13.12.2022

The construction sector, which is one of the basic dynamics of the economy and employment of Yalova, together with the Turkish economy, has come to a regression or even to a halt due to the continuous increase in concrete prices. The constant increases in concrete prices have caused significant borrowing in the sector, put many of our companies in Yalova, especially in the housing sector, in an economically difficult situation, caused a contraction in the sector, so many sectors have been affected by the domino effect.

Firms supplying ready-mixed concrete to Yalova continued their hike policies that they started in 2021 on a regular basis in 2022 as well. Ready-mixed concrete facilities serving our city act simultaneously and together, making the hikes on the same day and at the same times, leaving our contractors in a difficult situation. In addition, the same concrete companies that serve our city in another important issue sell concrete at lower prices to the surrounding provinces and districts, while they sell at higher prices in Yalova than in those provinces.

In addition, it is our members and contractors who are faced with penal sanctions if a deficiency is detected in the tests taken from the concrete. However, it is not our construction company that pours the concrete, it is the concrete plant, so they have the responsibility.

These increases in basic construction materials should be seriously controlled and examined. Cement and concrete plants should be asked to defend against these price increases. We do not say anything if there is a real cost increase, but it is thought-provoking that even though there are decreases in cost inputs, they do not reflect this decrease again and again and they do it simultaneously.

If the concrete plants operating in our province continue to implement high prices and hikes, we will follow up by conveying the issue to the Competition Authority and the Relevant Ministries.
